IKRAB INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS ROUNDTABLE DISCOURSE 2009

IKRAB International Economics Roundtable Discourse 2009
“Towards Enhancement of Economic Cooperation Amongst
Islamic Countries”

Date: 29 January 2009

Place: Meeting Room 1, Level 6, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi

Organized by
Institute of West Asian Studies (IKRAB)
With the cooperation of Faculty of Economics and Business & ENRE, UKM

1. Background
  • Level of trade and economic integration among OIC member countries has been very low.
  • The OIC in 2005 adopted the Protocol on Preferential Tariff Scheme (PRETAS) for Member States, expected to be implemented by 2009.
  • The protocol seeks for removal of trade barriers that impede trade flows. It aims to promote inter-regional trade among OIC member countries.
  • However, it is argued if improved market access, devoid of efficient regulatory frameworks, and competitive factors would help enhance and sustain any economic integration processes between participating economies.

2. Objectives of Roundtable Discussion

  • Exchange of thoughts and deliberation on the underlying and apparent factors that led to low economic integration amongst Islamic countries.
  • To deliberate on research and policy analysis on the merits and strategies of enhanced economic relationships between Islamic countries.
  • Deliberation on the establishment of an international research network linking researchers in Malaysia, Indonesia and West Asia.

3. Output

  • Roundtable Proceedings
  • Establishment of an international research network
  • Identification of priority research areas and sources of funds
